The Roverdene Challenge will change for 2008 with a new start venue, Whyteleafe H.Q. Church Road Whyteleafe. A weight limit of 15lbs. (7Kg) will be enforced. This is to ensure that the scouts are not over burdened; all surplus over this weight will be transported by the organisers. Weight limit does not apply to Explorer Scouts who should be able to plan their own load, and carry it. I would also like to point out that we expect Explorer Scouts to carry a full backpack kit including tent, stove, food, sleeping kit etc..
All scout teams will have an adult member to ensure the Scouts safety, this adult will form part of the team, please make sure your adults have been CRB checked. Just to verify a team should be 3 or 4 Scouts and 1 adult. Explorer scouts should be able to manage by themselves. The escort should carry a phone to contact the organisers should the need arise. Please use the phone contact considerately; we would call back any “pay as you go” phones if necessary. Scouts themselves should not be carrying their own phone.
This year the drink stop is at Parsons Pightle, calling here is compulsory. This is also the finish point for younger scouts. This will be at the only manned check point.
We suggest the scouts have a hot meal when they arrive at Roverdene, “Pot” rice or noodle type snack would be adequate without making the cooking pots dirty. The organisers will provide the ingredients to make breakfast.
This is meant to be a walking and navigational exercise and it will be harder for some than for others, encourage all to come along. We advise that all participants have had camping experience including winter conditions if possible. Whatever the outcome the experience will benefit all participants in the long run. I honestly believe it is no more difficult than I was expected to be able to do when I was of scout age.
A full kit list and the rules are included. Should the need arise I have some gear available to lend, please phone Martin to book it .The question sheet and other relevant information will be published via CD on Monday 3rd March. You will need to print question sheets, maps, pictures from the CD. Laminating your team map/s will help them especially if the weather is inclement.
A small charge of £10 per team will be collected at or before the start of the event. I look forward to seeing you all to compete in this event.
You can start at any time between 7:00 & 8:00 pm. The map you need is Ordnance Survey Explorer 146 Dorking, Box Hill, & Reigate.
The finish of the event is 11:00am Saturday morning at Roverdene campsite please request no one is collected before this time.
Rules (Guide lines for fair play)
The first point of contact if help is required should be one of the organisers unless you have an emergency (999) situation. If you do need to use one of the emergency services please call us as soon as you can.
Travel & operate in your team groups at all times.
Motorised transport is not allowed.
Points of merit will be awarded as we see fit.
The route is designed around footpaths. Crossing roads is inevitable but walking along roads is not necessary except on the starting section.
Please do not shine torches at house windows or doors.
Each team is required to call at Parsons Pightle 12th’s HQ for a hot drink.
Parsons Pightle is the finish of the first section, and the first question sheet should be handed in here.
The minimum kit list form part of the rules.
Subject to the requirement of the minimum kit list no scout should carry more than 15lbs (7kgs).
All teams must have an adult walking with them. (A competent explorer scout may be used if agreed with the organisers)
Points made in the above document form part of the rules.
