Report from Mercers Park

On Friday 17th March, 1st Caterham Scouts met up at the Scout Hut and started our walk to Mercers Park. We walked 10km while carrying our own personal camping equipment in a rucksack. We walked from Caterham Scout Hut, through Queen’s Park, towards the North Downs Way, down Quarry Hill, under the M25, towards Pendell Court then West to Mercers Park going under the M23. The walk was mainly off road and cross country. When we arrived at Mercers Park unfortunately it was still raining and we had to put up the tents. We had dinner which was wraps with fried pepper, chicken and spicy sauce (it was delicious!) On Saturday the weather had turned for the better and was very sunny which enabled us to dry out and have loads of fun. After bacon rolls and cereal for breakfast, we did an orienteering course around the lake. Later in the day we went either dingy sailing, kayaking or windsurfing, all three were very enjoyable and also very wet. Six of the older scouts joined us for the water sports, they had walked 16.5km with full kit including tents, cooking equipment and food. At the end of the camp we were all happy to go back to a warm bath or shower but we were all taking back an excellent experience. Thanks as always to the four leaders in particularly Alison S for organising the activities and the scrummy food!
