There are “Physical Recreation” activity badges for all levels of the scouting movement. Typically the rules for these badges are along the following lines:-
“Take a regular part in an active sport or physical pursuit for which an Activity Badge has not been gained. This can be a team game such as rugby, football, cricket or water polo; or an individual sport such as tennis, squash, running or gymnastics; or a pursuit such as walking, yoga, ice skating, dancing or keep fit.
Be able to demonstrate a reasonable level of skill in their sport or pursuit and give evidence of improvement. Explain the rules or guidelines that govern the sport or pursuit chosen. Demonstrate the preparations they make before taking part in the sport or pursuit.”
Tennis is a great game for young people, sociable, easy to organize and inexpensive. If you would like to do one of these badges, the Caterham and Whyteleafe Tennis Club, located in Manor Park, Whyteleafe would be glad to help. We have members with experience of scouts and guides who could give simple lessons at any convenient time over a period of weeks in the spring or summer. Your only expense would be a racquet and we could lend you a racquet for your first lessons. There would be no charge. We are doing this because we want to be part of the community in Caterham and also because we would like to encourage more young people to become members and their parents to become members and, yes, also because we like tennis and just want to see more people playing it.
Please pass these details to all youngsters in your section. If interested have a look at our web site (www.cw-tennis.org.uk) or get your parents to phone Hugh Bown, the club secretary on 01883 625463.
